Say, for example, that you were making a model sofa or chair. In this instance, the cushions would most likely have been made from sculpted foam board or Plasticine. Once these surfaces had been lightly primed, you would then apply a base colour. Then you might get a piece of fine cotton or calico and apply a little gouache paint either in a lighter or in a darker tone than the base colour to the fabric surface, making sure the paint wasn’t too watery. Then you would press the painted surface of the fabric to the model chair, and whe you removed the fabric, it would have left an imprint of the weave.

Place your metal rule about half a centimetre from the edge of the card. If you are right handed, hold the rule firmly in place with your left hand. Then with your right hand, using a sharp blade, place the blade on the top left edge of the piece of card. Angle the scalpel so that the top of the blade is resting against the edge of the metal rule and the tip of the blade is level with the top edge of the card. Now draw the scalpel across the top edge at a slow but regular pace until you reach the other side.

Keep a tissue or cloth to hand if necessary. Because PVA doesn’t dry instantly you can move the pieces if you haven’t quite placed them correctly first time. Use your try square to check the right angle. Carefully applying PVA glue with a small strip of card. Removing excess glue. Once the edges have dried fully, add the front and back to the left side and base. If you think it necessary, cut or tear a small piece of masking tape to temporarily keep the facia in place. Remember to ‘de-stick’ the tape.
