For more than a hundred years, decorators have chosen shiny works of lacquer—in the form of elegant and ornate boxes, tables, desks, mirrors, picture frames, serving trays, and musical instruments—to introduce elements of Asian art to home décor. Eileen set out to find a lacquer work teacher and soon settled on a talented Japanese craftsman named Seizo Sugawara. It was hard not to squirm as she posed for the artist, and her mind wandered. She wished she were swimming or climbing trees.
