McCarthy’s charges were never documented, but his speech set off a nationwide search for communists and communist sympathizers within the government and in positions of influence throughout American society. Two weeks before McCarthy’s speech, Hiss had been convicted of perjury for having denied that he passed secret material to Whittaker Chambers, a communist agent.
