Constitutional diagram of the gold-platinum system. After quenching the iridium-platinum alloys can be severely cold-worked, which increases considerably the hardness and other mechanical properties.

Fine pointed wires of this alloy are also used as electrodes for the perforation of diamond dies by the spark erosion technique. Gold-platinum alloys At temperatures just below the solidus, gold and platinum form a continuous series of solid solutions which split up at lower temperatures into two immiscible phases. As shown by Fig. 17(47) the phases on either side of the miscibility gap are fcc solid solutions differing from each other only in composition and lattice parameter. All the alloys between 0% and 100% of gold can be worked and rolled into sheet or drawn into wire.

Palladium is slowly attacked by hot hydrochloric acid and more rapidly by nitric acid. It is however resistant to corrosion at room temperature by hydrofluoric, perchloric, phosphoric, and acetic acids. In the presence of air it is slightly attacked by sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant element known, being resistant even to aqua regia and fuming sulphuric acid. The chemical resistance of rhodium is comparable to that of iridium although it is slightly attacked by hydrobromic acid which contains free bromine.
