The short answer: sometimes. The phrase window treatment refers to any kind of decoration used on, in, around, or over a window. Therefore, window treatment is the ubiquitous phrase used to define each and every type of window covering, from curtains, to blinds, to valances, and every variation in between. Let’s further explore the many variations. Draperies. These are used for more formal window coverings, are typically floor length, and are often operated using a relatively complex pulley-cord system to open and close them.
For example, do you intend to leave them open, or might you open and close them frequently? When they are drawn open, would you prefer them hanging in front of the window slightly, or on the wall so they do not obstruct any natural sunlight? If the latter is the case, be sure to install your hardware so that when the curtains are drawn fully open, they sit on the wall (see Stackback Allowance). If you are looking for some guidelines, here are a few to give you some ideas. Outside-mount rods are best placed anywhere from 2" to 8" above the window, extending approximately 4" to 6" or more on either side of the window molding.
Draperies Curtains. These also hang from some sort of mounting hardware along the top edge, but they have a much more casual look and feel than draperies. They open and close by hand — a more simple operation. They are typically hung from rods using rings, clips, tabs, ties, or directly through a rod pocket casing. Unlike draperies, curtains are flat panels, and the width is condensed after it is hung. Curtains may also be lined, depending on your preference. You may choose to hang your curtains as single panels per window that draw open to one side, or in pairs, drawing open to both sides.
